BATTLING PARKINSON'S DISEASE 48 YEARS
to- NOT AFRAID TO FALL
The video clip above is of Brian cycling up, "The Wall," on Mount Washington in New Hampshire, during the 2022 Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb race. This is the steepest section of the 7.6 mile Mt. Washington Auto Road course. A punishing 22 percent grade, that comes at the very end of the race.
The 2022 MWARBH race was an extraordinary experience to be a part of, Brian said. With the help and support of many people including Bill Miller from Giant Bicycles, and friend Jotham Oliver, (former MWARBH Event Coordinator,) Brian's team was designed to support his attempt to safely summit Mount Washington. Together they were able to help Brian achieve a time of 1:11:57, crushing his personal best time by more than an hour he set in the 2018 MWARBH race of 2:19:36. Being the very last racer to cross the starting line in a field of about 500 riders, Brian was shocked to have finished 50th in the event.
Brian's symptoms first began in 1976, at 14 years old. He hopes by sharing his 48 year-long journey, others can improve their lives living with Parkinson's disease, as he has.
“Not Afraid to Fall” is filled with helpful tips, real life stories, challenges, hardships, and personal triumphs in the face of living with Parkinson’s disease. Brian's ability to keep moving forward in spite of his challenging situation, is the underlining message. If you are struggling with PD and searching for new ways to manage your life, Brian's inspirational story offers the reader a new and hopeful perspective.
If you, or someone you love is looking to read an uplifting story about living with Parkinson’s disease, Not Afraid to Fall will not disappoint.
"I am strongly recommending this book to nurses, health care providers, medical students, and physicians at all levels. The book reminds us that medical illnesses and their treatments have many effects on patients well beyond our office, the hospital, and the doctor-patient relationship. While it can be difficult, if the medical professions do not take these effects into consideration, we cannot fully treat the whole patient."
"Family and friends of patients with any chronic illnesses will also benefit from reading this book. We often tend to withdraw from those with illnesses that are difficult for us to comprehend and cannot relate. Brian shows us how important those family members and friends are in his struggles. Their ability to sympathize, understand, and assist are crucial to his or her battles to live a more satisfactory and productive life."
"Finally, this book deserves to not only be read but to become a guide for those with any chronic illness, not just Parkinson’s disease. It is not how Brian responds to his specific illness but that he does respond. Each patient will have their own specific problems to face. Brian shows that with grit, determination, and help from others rewards are obtainable. He encourages others to find their own compromise with their own illness and to struggle on!"
